Background of the Study

Substance abuse among adolescents is a growing public health concern in Nigeria, with significant implications for health, education, and social well-being (UNODC, 2024). Peer-led health education programs have emerged as an effective strategy for substance abuse prevention, as adolescents are more likely to engage with and learn from their peers (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). These programs aim to provide accurate information about the dangers of drug abuse while fostering a supportive environment for positive behavioral change.

In Kogi State, the prevalence of drug and substance abuse among young people remains a critical challenge. While conventional drug education programs exist, peer-led interventions have gained attention for their potential to influence behavioral change effectively. However, there is limited empirical evidence on their effectiveness in Kogi State, necessitating an in-depth assessment of their impact on substance abuse prevention.

Statement of the Problem

Despite various anti-drug campaigns and awareness programs, substance abuse among adolescents in Kogi State remains a significant concern. Traditional educational interventions have often failed to engage young people effectively, as they may not relate to authority-led programs (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Peer-led health education presents a promising alternative, but there is a need for empirical research to assess its effectiveness in reducing substance use among adolescents in Kogi State.

This study aims to evaluate the impact of peer-led health education programs on substance abuse prevention, determining their effectiveness in shaping attitudes and behaviors toward drug use.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of substance abuse awareness among adolescents in Kogi State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of peer-led health education in substance abuse prevention.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the implementation of peer-led health education programs.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of substance abuse awareness among adolescents in Kogi State?
  2. How effective are peer-led health education programs in preventing substance abuse?
  3. What are the challenges in implementing peer-led substance abuse prevention programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Peer-led health education programs have no significant impact on substance abuse prevention.
  2. There is no significant relationship between peer education and substance abuse awareness.
  3. Barriers to peer-led programs do not significantly affect their effectiveness.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on secondary schools in Kogi State, assessing the role of peer-led health education in substance abuse prevention. Limitations include differences in peer influence, variations in drug accessibility, and potential resistance to behavior change.

Definitions of Terms
